Masonite International Corporation

Building supply companies have had a cooling off as a group as housing starts begins to slow down and interest rates rise. But Masonite International Inc. (DOOR) looks a bit oversold following along with others in that trend. It has an unacceptably low Zenith Index due to a very weak chart pattern and the company taking on quite a bit of new debt to finance a lot of acquisitions, focused in the door manufacturing and building products industry worldwide. It does quite a bit of business in England despite being based in Florida. Tariff effects are a bit uncertain. Institutions are net acquirers and Dimensional Fund Advisors is among them, a good sign. We were not too impressed by the company's website, nor by its complete lack of a glitzy annual report or any CEO Letter to Shareholders, indicating lack of shareholder concern. Corporate governance is not too bad given reasonable executive compensation for a corporation this size. It appears to be enlarging and then shrinking its Board of Directors in an effort to effect management changes.

The company has good reporting by GMI standards, but a somewhat whacky way of dividing reporting into segments of North American Residential, Europe (where many of its doors are made), and "Architectural." The company definitely on the acquisition trail with six in the last two years.

Fair value estimates and analysts' projections seem way out of whack with the current price and trend in the stock. This corporation has a rare situation where the average p/e to current ratio is favorable for a stock upward move, and many analysts are projecting a move ti $70+. This is underscored by a rather stable analysis from Standard & Poor's seeing low risk due to the company's size. We think we would normally see higher average trading volume for a corporation this size. We would also expect to see dividends but there are none.

We note the MACD peaks projection (histogram) in particular suggests that a bounce in stock share price is about to take place.

Channeling Potential

The summary below includes a value for `Degree,' which refers on a
scale of 1 to 10 the range of a channel in the period under consi-
deration compared to the total range of price movement. It also looks
for the last closing price to be within the channel, otherwise zeroed.
The `Index' is the `Degree' weighted for volatility. Generally, the
the higher the index, the more suitable is the stock for trading as
a `rolling stock' between channel high and low points.
